Essence Two-Piece Elongated Dual Flush Toilet

Our house is tiny, under 700sq ft, so, if you can imagine, our bathroom is tiny too. Because of this I can’t afford to waste any free space. We’ve been trying to decide how to renovate our bathroom for some time. We want to make it feel like we’re in a luxurious bathroom, but where to begin? So when I first saw these toilets with the buttons on the tank I was intrigued, and when the opportunity arose, I took it. I did some research and learned these toilets have several really cool features some of which include, DREAMCLEAN™, an innovative rim design releases powerful rush of water, scrubs the bowl top‑to‑bottom with every flush. INFINABRIGHT™, a durable coating that reduces dirt and bacteria build-up ensuring the surface shines longer so you scrub less. And a QUICK-RELEASE SEAT you can remove and replace for quick, easy, thorough cleaning with the push of a button. And they use only a minimal amount of water, 1.28 GPF when flushing. And did I mention the flush trigger is buttons on top of the tank which means I don’t have to leave space on the side so I can put my cool TP stand/TP Tower/Magazine Rack there. And still have room to extend my vanity. I really like the skirt around it, concealing the trap, although the design proved to be quite a challenge during installation. We couldn’t go at it from the holes on the side, they are useless, can get a wrench in there but couldn’t turn it. We ended up going in from the back and even then it required maneuvering to get a small flashlight and wrench in to tighten it down, and you best have small hands, it’s a small space. We have a high end bidet we transferred to this toilet but the level of difficulty that involved I can’t even begin to express in this review, thought we were going to need longer supply lines but we did get it on there and connected. All in all, it took longer then I had expected to get it installed, but it’s done. As I step back and gaze at our new throne, I have to say it looks and performs beautifully, and I can’t say enough about the two dual flush buttons on top, one for solids the other for liquids, and how individually each packs a powerful punch that cleans the bowl completely, just like it says it should, it’s incredible, I’m really glad I chose this product I think it ads a little elegance to my tiny bathroom.  Read Less

The toilet looks really good which is not something I thought I would ever say about a toilet. The smooth, clean lines give it an extra touch of style. The toilet looks really good which is not something I thought I would ever say about a toilet. The smooth, clean lines give it an extra touch of style. We are about to upgrade our entire master bathroom and this is the first step in the upgrade. The quality of the product is excellent it feels very solid and well made. I like the two button flush to save water and the quiet close toilet seat. I removed one star because it was more difficult to install than I anticipated. The smooth lines and large stable base come at a cost in the extra weight of the toilet. I would estimate it is twice the weight of a regular toilet. This made it more difficult to handle but it was expected given the design. As the hold down bolts are accessible through small round holes in the toilet's sides I expected it to be a little more difficult to install and I thought I was prepared for it. But I was not able to get my finger and thumb far enough in to put the washer and nut on the hold down bolt. The washer slipped over easily enough with just my fingertips but balancing the nut on my fingertips and twisting it to start the thread was difficult and took multiple attempts. Everything had to be done by feel as your hand covers the hole. A few times when I dropped the nut it rolled out of reach so I was fishing blindly with a piece of wire to retrieve it. In addition it was only possible to do an eighth of a turn at a time with a wrench to tighten the nut because of the size of the hole. It took me a couple of hours in contorted positions to get the nuts on and tighten them. The rest of the installation was simple and instructions were clear. Again because of the style there was less room than usual at the back of the toilet but it was workable. I would recommend LIXIL to provide additional guidance on how to secure the toilet. Something like additional instructions, tool recommendations, a video etc. to help with the installation as I believe even a professional would have the same issues as I did. Second, I liked the "european style" flush button on the top of the tank and the fact that it has 2 flush options so that you can save water when a full flush isn't needed. Third, I love the easy-on, easy-off toilet seat with the press of the buttons under the seat cover. That also makes cleaning the bowl much easier. The soft-close of the seat cover is a nice plus along with the extended height of the toilet. Makes me want to replace all my toilets with this model. As a consumer, I have purchased several other Lixil-Grohe branded products and highly recommend them for both their quality and customer service. Customer service is always responsive and helpful if ever you experience an issue with your product, no matter how long you have had them installed. They quickly send replacement parts if/when something wears out. A real selling point for consumers like myself. I haven't had the toilet installed long enough to evaluate how the coating stands up over time with regard to cleaning the inside of the bowl but so far so good and I'm optimistic to know that Grohe paid attention enough to make this a feature.  Read Less

This sleek, modern dual flush toilet was relatively easy for an older DIY homeowner like myself to install. The toilet is very efficient and has a much more comfortable seat height than the 30yr old toilet that it replaced. Both my wife and I very much like the operation of this new toilet and its included slow-close seat. Installation notes: The installation instructions for the toilet assembly and the seat are thorough and easy to follow. As with other modern concealed trapway toilets with their larger ‘footprint’ in the back, this unit requires the water supply line to be within certain positions from the toilet/drain centerline so that the supply line and shutoff valve does not interfere with the rear of the bowl unit. In our installation we had nearly 4 inches of clearance between the rear of the bowl unit and the wall and it was not necessary to move the supply line floor exit point. I suspect that will be the case with most existing construction replacements. When mounting the tank to the bowl, take care that the bottom connection to the float valve (where the supply line connects to the tank) remains centered in the circular recess of the bowl unit. If installed off-center, the hand-tightening ‘wings’ typically used on plastic supply line nuts may contact one side of the access hole as the nut is tightened.  Read Less
